Adventures in Extreme Seed-Saving

You may think of seed-saving as a fairly gentle – even bucolic – pastime. But not the way Kelly Dodson and Sue Milliken of Far Reaches Farm in Port Townsend do it!

Come to Seedy Saturday tomorrow to hear about their adventures botanizing in the mountains of SW China – an area rarely visited by westerners. Their talk will mix serious plant stuff for plant geeks – including some of their propagation tips – with lots of scenery, humour, and general excitement to keep the more botanically-challenged amused.

And there’s a serious purpose behind all this adventuring – saving and growing seeds from areas where little-known plant communities are under threat.

Their talk, “Tales of Plant Hunting in SW China” will be at 12:45, February 18th, in the Victoria Conference Centre. And, no, they didn’t really meet this or any other dragon (so far as I know). But there don’t seem to be any pictures of them leaning precariously over the edge of a cliff trying to reach an elusive seed pod. I can’t imagine why not.
